This Harper’s Weekly cartoon expresses the opinion that the engine powering the reelection campaign of William Howard Taft is the promise of federal patronage. The president drives “The Great Republican Machine,” but it is Vice President James Sherman who goads the Republican Elephant to move forward. Looking on from behind the political fence are the Progressive Bull Moose and the Democratic Donkey.
