Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Puck cartoonist Udo J. Keppler visualizes Theodore Roosevelt’s expected challenge of President William Howard Taft for the 1912 Republican presidential nomination as a scene based on Edgar Allen Poe’s 1845 poem, “The Raven.” The cartoon predicts that Roosevelt will crow—“Nevermore”—at the shocked Taft until the president’s candidacy dies. In fact, Taft survived the acrimonious primary season to defeat Roosevelt at the convention, provoking the former president to run under the Progressive Party banner.
