At the Republican National Convention and then at the Progressive National Convention, Theodore Roosevelt told his supporters, “We stand at Armageddon, and we battle for the Lord.” His biblical metaphor of the final cosmic battle between good and evil is parodied in this cartoon’s prediction of the presidential election on November 5. The caption quotes the last New Testament book, “Revelation,” and depicts the lightning bolts of “Democratic Victory” destroying the Progressive Party leaders. The figures are (left-right): publisher Frank Munsey, co-chairman of the Progressive Party and its major contributor; Gifford Pinchot, the former chief forester in the Interior Department; Roosevelt, wearing his egotistical “I” crown; political boss William Flinn of Pittsburgh and probably political boss Tim Woodruff of Brooklyn, New York (though it may be Progressive vice-presidential nominee Hiram Johnson). |
