This Puck cover presents the 1908 presidential race as analogous to Aesop’s fable of the tortoise (Democrat William Jennings Bryan) and the hare (Republican William Howard Taft). Although Taft seemed to have the clear advance, the cartoon warns that if he takes a nap like the proverbial hare, then Bryan could win the contest. Taft did take a vacation in July and August, but engaged in an energetic campaign thereafter and won the election.
