This Harper’s Weekly cartoon presents the Democratic national ticket and their New York supporters as pirates preparing to steal from the national treasury. They are (left-right): State Senator Patrick McCarren, boss of the Brooklyn Democratic machine; William J. “Fingy” Conner of Buffalo, chairman of the state party organization; presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan; a miniature version of vice-presidential nominee John Kern; Tammany Hall boss Charles F. Murphy; and the Tammany Tiger, licking its lips in anticipation of federal patronage, money, and influence. Contrary to this cartoon’s image, the rivalry between McCarren and Murphy made Bryan’s goal of Democratic cooperation in New York difficult.
