In 1908, William Jennings Bryan insisted that Norman E. Mack, publisher and editor of the Buffalo Times, be elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Mack had pledged to the Democratic presidential nominee that he would work diligently to heal the rift in his home state between the political machines of Tammany Hall and Patrick McCarren of Brooklyn. In this Harper’s Weekly cartoon, Mack whispers to Charles F. Murphy that Bryan will carry New York in the November election, but the political boss (dressed in a Tammany Tiger suit) feigns deafness. In fact, Republican William Howard Taft won the state with 53% of the vote to Bryan’s 41%, Socialist Eugene Debs’s 2.4%, Independent League Thomas Hisgen’s 2.2%, and Prohibitionist Eugene Chafin’s 1.4%.
