For its St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) issue, the Republican humor magazine Judge portrays William Jennings Bryan as a shamrock. Irish-Catholics were a major voting bloc for the Democratic Party. The emphasis in this cartoon on the Irish emblem’s first syllable—“sham”—conveys the message that the Democratic presidential candidate is a fraud. The caption and image joke that he has enough “cheek” to seek a third nomination.
