Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Like W. A. Rogers’s “Good Business,” this E. W. Kemble cartoon pokes fun at William Jennings Bryan amassing great wealth on the lecture circuit while promoting himself as a champion of the common people. The Democratic Donkey strenuously attempts to pull the candidate’s bandwagon, while the dog of “Hard Times” follows behind. The man sitting on the back is a stereotypical farmer who supports Bryan and his populist platform. After the Democratic National Convention, the cartoonist transformed the image of the farmer into that of vice-presidential nominee John Kern.
