This Puck cartoon uses the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi as an analogy of the close relationship between President Theodore Roosevelt and his personally chosen successor, William Howard Taft. The president had determined that his secretary of war’s qualities of intelligence, administrative ability, and loyalty to Roosevelt himself best qualified Taft for the Republican presidential nomination. In the Bible, Naomi is Ruth’s mother-in-law, who decides to return to her people after the death of her sons. Out of great love and respect, Ruth vows to follow Naomi. Here, Taft as Ruth embraces Roosevelt as Naomi and promises, “thy policies shall be my policies” (replacing the original “people”). |
