This Judge cartoon predicts that the November 8 presidential election will be the third consecutive “shipwreck” for the Democratic Party. Presidential nominee Alton B. Parker’s ship has run aground on “Rock Ribbed Republicanism” in the stormy seas of state electoral returns. On shore, the hapless “Safe & Sane Life Saving Corps” is unable to rescue the sinking vessel. Former president Grover Cleveland carries a large scroll of his advice. The short man pointing to the wreck is Parker’s campaign manager, David B. Hill. The rope thrown by Senator Arthur Pue Gorman of Maryland does not reach the ship. He stands by the Democratic rowboat damaged in 1896 and 1900 by “Bryanism,” a reference to the Democratic presidential nominee of those years, William Jennings Bryan.
