This cover features the vice-presidential nominees of the Republican and Democratic Parties, Charles W. Fairbanks (left) and Henry G. Davis (right), respectively. In 1904, neither party’s presidential nominees campaigned openly for election until President Theodore Roosevelt’s Democratic challenger, Alton B. Parker, hit the hustings in the final weeks of the campaign. Therefore, the brunt of the electioneering fell upon the vice-presidential nominees. This cartoon predicts that the long stride of Fairbanks (who was 6' 4'') would prove more effective than the swiftness of Davis. As in Puck’s cartoon of July 27, “Never Too Late to Run,” the 80-year-old Democrat is portrayed as an athlete. In fact, his health was good enough to allow him to live another 12 years. |
