Here, David B. Hill is a dishonest cobbler who guarantees Alton B. Parker that the small-footed judge will be able to fill the large presidential shoes of Grover Cleveland’s 1884 and 1892 election victories. Hill had been governor of New York (1885-1891) and a U.S. senator (1891-1897). Although when this cartoon was published he was no longer boss of New York State Democrats, he still wielded influence and in 1903 convinced Parker to seek the party’s 1904 presidential nomination. Cartoonist W. A. Rogers considered Hill to be a partisan demagogue and spoilsman, but showed respect for the judge in his drawings. However, in this cartoon Parker does not measure up to Cleveland. “Wolfert’s Roost” was the name of Hill’s estate outside of Albany, New York. |
