Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Shortly after his election to a second term (and first full one), President Theodore Roosevelt announced that he would not seek a third term. This Judge cover implies that his decision was provoked, at least in part, by not wanting to endure more Democratic mudslinging if he ran again. In 1908, Roosevelt abided by his declaration against a third term, but saw his handpicked Republican nominee, Secretary of War William Howard Taft, elected to succeed him. Unsatisfied with Taft’s performance in office, Roosevelt unsuccessfully challenged him for the Republican nomination in 1912, and then ran for president on the Progressive Party ticket. The split in the Republican Party allowed Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win the White House.
