As the November 8 election approached, this Judge cover presents the campaign of President Theodore Roosevelt as the “Republican Express.” The engine of the GOP train is labeled “Protection” in reference to the Republican stance in favor of high tariffs and carries Roosevelt’s portrait on its front. On a handcar, the Democratic ticket of presidential nominee Alton B. Parker (right) and vice-presidential nominee Henry G. Davis (left) frantically pump the “St. Louis Platform,” which endorsed tariff reform, in a futile attempt to escape being run over by the “Republican Express.” “The Lockjaw Judge” refers to Parker’s silence throughout much of the campaign until a speaking tour in the final weeks. |
