The message of this cartoon is that the anti-imperialism espoused by Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan would leave American citizens abroad vulnerable to attack. Here, Bryan tries to remove the protective U.S. flag from around American missionaries, diplomats, and businessmen in China who are under assault from the Chinese Boxers.
Note that in the summer of 1900 Judge began running the full-dinner pail emblem and motto on its magazine covers. Both would be adopted by the Republican National Committee during the election campaign. |
