When the Spanish-American War began in April 1898, William Jennings Bryan joined the Third Nebraska Volunteer Regiment at the rank of colonel. He did not see combat because his regiment remained in Florida due to an outbreak of typhoid and other diseases. When the peace treaty was signed in December 1898, he resigned his commission. Published in the penultimate issue of Judge before the presidential election, this cover cartoon argues that the Democratic nominee’s opposition to the McKinley administration’s policy in the Philippines aids the Filipino rebels fighting American troops and, therefore, is the moral equivalent of treason.
