"You Shall Not Press Down Upon the Brow of labor This Crown"

This image reverses the stirring oratory of William Jennings Bryan’s “Cross of Gold” speech at the Democratic National Convention, which he concluded with religious imagery: “Having behind us the producing masses of this nation and the world … we will answer their demand for a gold standard by saying to them: ‘You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.’” Here, it is the sham “bunco dollar” of free silver that Bryan is attempting to place as a crown of thorns on American labor. This continues the theme that inflationary free silver will hurt American workers, while the gold standard is the foundation of economic stability and prosperity for the nation. |
