Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Free-silver advocates contended that the gold standard aided the wealthy few while injuring average Americans economically through deflation, which keep crop prices low and made it more difficult to repay debts. This postdated cover cartoon, published on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, takes a contrary position. Artist W. A. Rogers argues that the gold standard benefits common Americans, particularly those most in need of financial assistance. It does so by supposedly stabilizing the value of money, providing a firm foundation for economic growth and prosperity, and, therefore, upholding (left-right) the financial security of the Union veteran’s military pension, the widow’s life insurance policy, and the savings accounts of the orphan and laboring man.
