"The Political Red Riding-Hood."

In blaming Republican policies for the economic depression, Governor Samuel
Tilden characterized the situation as a gaunt and hungry wolf. Pro-Republican
cartoonists, such as George Colt (here) and Thomas Nast, took that metaphor and
used it against the Democratic presidential nominee. In this cartoon Colt
employs a fairy tale analogy to depict Tilden as the Democratic Wolf frightening
Columbia, portrayed as Little Red Riding-Hood. |
