Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Thomas Nast cover for Harper's Weekly heralds the Republican presidential
nomination of General Ulysses S. Grant. Instead of exuberance, the tone is dignified and reverential, depicting a serious candidate for a serious time. It is not the Republican party but Columbia, the nation herself, who selects and honors Grant with the nomination.
This same cartoon appeared previously on the cover of Harper's Weekly in 1864 when Grant received a gold medal and the official thanks of Congress for his military service during the Civil War. In reproducing the image, Nast and his editors emphasize the continuity between Grant's military leadership for the Union cause and the nominee's anticipated political leadership in working for the nation's best interests as president. |
