Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Thomas Nast again presents the conflict between Chief Justice Salmon Chase and the Democratic party over black manhood suffrage (represented here by the tiny black figure in the glass). In contrast with the previous cartoon, "A Wild-Goose Chase," in this cartoon it is the party's depiction that is more negative than the candidate's. The Democratic party is an ill man who hesitates to take the proper medicine, i.e., to do what is in his (its) best interest. Rather than being on a quixotic quest, as in "A Wild-Goose Chase," the presidential hopeful is the visiting physician who soberly proffers the cure for the party's decline.
