This simple sketch from the Wide-Awake Pictorial associates the Spirit of Disunion with the three rivals of Republican Abraham Lincoln: Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, Southern Democrat John Breckinridge, and Constitutional Unionist John Bell. The demon is foiled in his attempt to light the fires of disunion, leaving Lincoln—the original rail—standing tall and awake.
