Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
The Pennsylvania Statesman was a campaign newspaper supporting Southern Democrat John Breckinridge for the presidency. The dark outline allegedly reproduces the size and shape of the type of knife used by radical abolitionist John Brown in his raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry in 1859. He failed in his attempt to foment a slave rebellion, was captured, and then executed by the state of Virginia. This image and text (“Black Republican”) associates the violent abolitionism of John Brown with the Republican Party, even though the overwhelming majority of Republicans were only opposed to the expansion of slavery and were not abolitionists.
