Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Campaign Plain Dealer cartoon presents “The Five Eras in Douglas’ Life Illustrated. The two upper insets show his early work as an apprentice cabinetmaker (right) and schoolteacher (left), and the two lower insets depict him as a U.S. senator (left) and meeting Tsar Nicholas I (right) in St. Petersburg while the Illinois politician was on a tour of Europe in 1853. The center circular envisions Douglas—“The Self Made Man”—as president of the United States. Two weeks later, the newspaper printed an unflattering depiction of the “Five Eras” in the life of Republican presidential nominee Abraham Lincoln.
