A counterpart to the collage of Stephen Douglas’s life, this Campaign Plain Dealer cartoon surveys the “Five Eras in ‘Old Abe’s’ Life Illustrated.” Here, the tone is mocking as Lincoln begins (upper left) and ends (center) his working life as a rail-splitter, having failed in the latter to win the presidential election of 1860. He is pictured during the intervening years serving as a “rear-admiral” on a flatboat, being strangled by an Indian during the Black Hawk War, and accepting the Republican presidential nomination. |
