This cartoon envisions the news of the Electoral Commission's decision as a high-society ball. Columbia ("Mrs. U.S.") politely refuses Samuel Tilden's dance card as she walk to the dance floor with President-elect Hayes. Tilden's top hat has collapsed behind his back, while Hayes suspiciously glances at the defeated Democrat out of the corner of his eye. This is one of the few cartoon caricatures of Hayes to appear in Harper's Weekly during the 1876-1877 election campaign and controversy.
