In the Harper’s Weekly cartoon, Uncle Sam appears as a doctor who prescribes a rest cure for the Republican Elephant, which has became ill from eating “Roosevelt Pie.” The bolt of Theodore Roosevelt and his supporters from Republican ranks inflicted a serious injury on the party’s ability to compete effectively in the presidential election of 1912. Even though most GOP politicians did not follow Roosevelt into the Progressive Party, the Republican National Committee was only able to collect about half the usual amount of campaign contributions because donors were reluctant to contribute to what they considered to be a losing cause. Even President William Howard Taft, the Republican nominee, privately concluded that he would not be reelected. |
