Although President Theodore Roosevelt did not go on a campaign tour in 1908 as this cartoon suggests, he provided continual advice to William Howard Taft, frequently voiced criticisms of Democratic nominee William Jennings Bryan, and undoubtedly earned Taft votes through his close association with the Republican nominee. Here, Roosevelt appears in his Rough Rider uniform from the Spanish-American War, riding an old nag, Ginger (meaning “pep”), as he rouses the countryside in the fashion of Paul Revere. |
