This Harper’s Weekly cartoon depicts William Jennings Bryan as a tailor who supplies prison uniforms for businessmen. The message is that the Democratic presidential nominee’s proposed policies are a dangerous threat to American business. The caged parrot, which feeds on ink, represents his publication, The Commoner.
Cartoonist W. A. Rogers’s image of a prison-suit tailor is similar to Thomas Nast’s 1875 cartoon about Samuel J. Tilden, who persecuted the Tweed and Canal Rings while governor of New York. The September 19, 1908 issue in which the featured cartoon appears also has a tribute to Nast’s central role in “The Origin of American Cartoon Symbols,” written by the famous cartoonist’s biographer, Albert Bigelow Paine. |
