Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Puck cover interprets President Theodore Roosevelt’s rejection of the Republican nomination for a third term as a self-serving gesture allowing him to appear humble while envisioning a return to the White House four years later. The depiction of Roosevelt as Caesar was common among critics, who considered the president’s policies to be imperialistic. Even though he did eventually decide to challenge Taft for the Republican nomination in 1912 and then to run as an independent, both unsuccessfully, the evidence indicates that Roosevelt had no intention of doing so in 1908 because he sincerely considered Taft to be a legitimate heir to his policies. |
