On a handcar, the Democratic ticket of presidential nominee Alton B. Parker (right) and vice-presidential nominee Henry G. Davis (left) frantically pump the “St. Louis Platform,” which endorsed tariff reform, in a futile attempt to escape being run over by the “Republican Express.” “The Lockjaw Judge” refers to Parker’s silence throughout much of the campaign until a speaking tour in the final weeks. |
