This cover of Judge, the pro-Republican humor magazine, presents President Theodore Roosevelt and Senator Mark Hanna, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, as “Good Friends.” Cartoonist Victor Gillam dismisses press discussion of animosity between the two men as a figment of Democratic journalists’ imagination. In fact, Roosevelt and Hanna were not close friends as shown here, but were political rivals, with the Ohio senator being encouraged by GOP businessmen to challenge the president for the 1904 nomination. On the other hand, the two had worked closely together on common political projects, including settling the anthracite coal strike in 1902. As Hanna lay dying of typhoid fever around the time this cartoon was published, he and Roosevelt had put aside any personal acrimony between them. After Hanna’s death on February 15, 1904, the president remarked that the late senator had been “a big man in every way and as forceful a personality as we have seen in public life in our generation.” |
