Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This cartoon accurately predicts the enormous presence of popular sentiment among Republican delegates for making Theodore Roosevelt the Republican vice-presidential nominee. Initially, the New York governor was publicly and privately ambivalent about accepting the honor. However, his attendance at the Republican National Convention on June 19-21 caused widespread excitement among attendees and helped seal his selection. His military heroism was a key reason for his popularity, and he is pictured here in the Rough Rider uniform he wore during the Spanish-American War. He was also attractive to delegates because of his record of reform as governor and his reputation for independence from political machines. At the national convention, he was the only delegate to vote against his nomination for vice-president, but readily accepted the offer.
