presidential nominee Grover Cleveland for encouraging the spread of rumors about
the candidate's fathering of a child out of wedlock. Stephen Elkins, the West
Virginian coal and railroad magnate who served as Blaine's campaign manager, and
New York Sun editor Charles Dana, who endorsed Greenback-labor nominee Benjamin
Butler, goad the crazed dogs of "clerical slanderer" and "common
slanderer" to attack Cleveland at the governor's mansion. The Democratic
candidate, however, resolutely guards the door from his rocking chair.
