Former governor Samuel Tilden of New York, the unsuccessful "Democratic
presidential nominee in 1876, was still popular among Democrats. This cartoon
pokes fun at his numerous physical ailments, such as arthritis and palsy, which
caused him to withdraw his name from contention for the 1884 nomination. Along
with assorted medicine bottles and apparatuses, Tilden heads for his New York
residence, Greystone.
