This post-election cartoon lampoons the ill fate of Greenback-Labor nominee Benjamin Butler. He is seen here as a political tramp (an allusion to his frequent party-switching) who is now left out in the cold since the heat of the Charles Dana's New York Sun editorials was not enough to ignite his candidacy. Butler did not envision winning a victory in the electoral college, but he did think it possible to win enough votes to send the contest into the House of Representatives. |
