Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
Henry Watterson, editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, was a leading Democratic advocate of free trade. Here, cartoonist Thomas Nast portrays Watterson as Samson, the biblical strongman, tearing apart the Democratic party (symbolized by a tiger) over the tariff issue: free trade versus protective tariffs. In the background, the Democratic Donkey gallops away. Watterson tried unsuccessfully to convince delegates to the Democratic National Convention to endorse tariff reform in its 1884 platform.
