Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Puck cartoon portrays Governor Grover Cleveland of New York, a leading candidate for (and eventual winner of) the Democratic presidential nomination, as a hard-working chief executive who lives a monkish life. He spurns invitations to balls and parties (wastebasket) and marriage proposals from eligible young women. Cleveland's private life, however, became the subject of great controversy when it was reported that, years earlier, he had fathered a child out of wedlock.
