Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This cartoon is a clear statement that the American voters should not turn control of the federal government over to the Democratic party because it is the party of Rebellion (i.e., the Confederate cause). Twenty years have not been enough time to wipe away that indictment. Uncle Sam points out the treacherous rocks into which the Democratic party nearly wrecked the Ship of State: "Rebel Pensions," "Lost Cause," "Rebel Claims," "Repudiation," "Fraud," "Spoils," and "Inflation." The rejected Winfield Hancock is joined by (left to right): former congressman Benjamin Butler of Massachusetts, Senator L. Q. C. Lamar of Mississippi, Senator Wade Hampton of South Carolina, and Louisville Courier-Journal editor Henry Watterson of Kentucky.
