The Republican Elephant mutters at the graveside of the Democratic Tiger that he cannot endure "another such victory." He is battered and bruised, with severed tail, yet wears the laurel wreath of champions after the Electoral Commission awarded Rutherford Hayes the presidency. Pyrrhus, the author of the quote, was a king of ancient Epirus, after whom the term "Pyrrhic Victory"-meaning a costly win-was named.
