This A. B. Frost cartoon stresses the hypocrisy of Democratic presidential
nominee Samuel Tilden by presenting him as a two-faced actor. One face looks to
the audience as he orates on the benefits of civil service reform. He wears a
gold-coin cufflink, an emblem of his hard-money stance, while his running-mate
Thomas Hendricks appears as the soft-money Rag Baby, stuffed in a top hat, with
an inflation balloon attached to his foot. Tilden's other face looks back at his
alleged record of Confederate sympathy and cronyism with the corrupt Tweed Ring.
Above him, "Tilden and Hendricks" is written on the back of the
"stars-and-bars" flag of the Confederacy. |
