Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
A campaign banner for the 1876 Republican presidential ticket. Bust portraits
of Ohio governor Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler are framed with
laurel wreaths. Above them hang swags of drapery with tassels. A bald eagle
rests on the top of the portraits, flanked by four American flags, and holds
part of one of the flags in his beak. Above him the words "Liberty and
Union" appear in an aureole of light.
Between the portraits is a cornucopia, and below each of them a bundle of
fasces. A similar banner was produced by Currier & Ives for the Democratic
ticket the same year. (See "Grand National Democratic Banner," no.
1876-3.)Source: American Political Prints, 1766 - 1876: A Catalog of the Collections in the Library of Congress, 1991, by Bernard F. Reilly, Jr. |
