Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This cartoon appears in the same issue as "Matched(?)" and continues cartoonist Thomas Nast's theme of Seymour and the Democrats as evil. Here, the Democratic ticket of Seymour (r) and Blair (l), along with Wade Hampton (c), appear as the witches from Shakespeare's Macbeth. The poem beneath the cartoon cleverly mimics Shakespeare's incantation with a litany of Democratic sins and sinners. The "290" on Seymour's headband refers to the Alabama, a Confederate vessel constructed in England, and captained by Admiral Raphael Semmes.
