Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This full-page cover celebrates Republican Ulysses S. Grant's triumph in the presidential election over Democrat Horatio Seymour. Political cartoonists in the 19th century were not squeamish about depicting bloody and even deadly acts of violence against living persons. Here, Grant beheads Seymour with his sword and hoists the American flag, representing "Union" and "Equal Rights." The president-elect's gallant steed rears its front legs over the felled horse and body of an inebriated Frank Blair, as bourbon spills out of the failed vice-presidential candidate's bottle. The "Rebellion" of the Democratic party comprises resistance to the Union draft ("My friends") and to Reconstruction ("K.K.K.").
