This cartoon integrates the prevalent theme of Lincolnís sense of humor with satire about the short stature of his Democratic rival for the presidency, George McClellan, who was sometimes known as "Little Mac." The shovel McCellan holds may refer to a possible campaign promise to clean up the government after the allegedly corrupt Lincoln administration was voted out of office.
