Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Funniest of Awl cover cartoon presents presidential nominee George McClellan, a War Democrat, surrendering to the Peace Democrats as he accepts the presidential nomination. The honor is bestowed by a demon emerging out of the “Bottomless Pit” with “Slavery a Constitutional Right” written on its arm. McClellan’s shovel is broken to resemble a pitchfork, his sword reveals his “weakness,” and he is about to step on the pick labeled “The Weight of the Responsibility.” In the background, Democrats celebrate with “Our Way Or No Fight” and other slogans. The figure second from the left is Dean Richmond, political boss of the New York State Democratic machine and a major promoter of McClellan’s candidacy. Beside Richmond (third from the left) is Congressman Fernando Wood of New York, a prominent Peace Democrat.
