Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
This Campaign Plain Dealer cartoon criticizes pro-slavery Democrats who bolted the party to nominate John C. Breckinridge for president in competition with the newspaper’s candidate, Stephen A. Douglas. In particular, the cartoon condemns Caleb Cushing of Massachusetts as a demon. Cushing was a former congressman (1835-1843) and U.S. attorney general (1853-1857) who served as chairman of the Democratic National Convention in April 1860 in Charleston, South Carolina, and of the bolters’ convention in Baltimore, Maryland, in June. |
